BASE Tree Trunk Tea-Cosy Pattern

When working flat (right and left sides) the odd rows are right side, and the even rows are wrong side.  When measuring height, measure it on a recessive (purl) rib as the dominants (knits) will have a longer tail/foot.

Using dark brown dk yarn, and 3.5mm needles...

Right side:
Cast on 108 leaving at least a 5 inch tail.
row 1 - [K3, sl1, K2TOG, PSSO, K3,  P3] repeat to end
row 2 - [K3, P7] repeat to end
row 3 - [K2, sl1, K2TOG, PSSO, K2, P3] repeat to end
row 4 - [K3, P5] repeat to end
row 5 - [K1, sl1, K2TOG, PSSO, K1, P3] repeat to end (54 stitches)
row 6 - [K3, P3] repeat to end
row 7 - [K3, P3] repeat to end

repeat rows 6 and 7 (basic 3x3 rib) for 3 1/4".

This is where you can get fancy with thicker/thinner lines or knots if you are confident.

row 23 - cast off 6 stitches, and [K3, P3*] repeat to end
row 24 - [K3, P3*] repeat to end                  *or follow your thicker/thinner rib patterns as necessary
row 25 - [K3, P3*] repeat to end
continue rows 24 and 25 for 1" (roughly 5 rows depending on guage) so total piece is 4 1/4".
end after a wrong side row (row 30)
Cut a tail of thread and slide to the middle of your circular knitting needles and leave hanging until ready to join after completing left side.

Left side:
follow as right side instructions until...

row 24 - cast off 6 stitches, and [K3, P3*] repeat to end
row 25 - [K3, P3*] repeat to end                  *or follow your thicker/thinner rib patterns as necessary
row 26 - [K3, P3*] repeat to end
continue rows 25 and 26 for 1" (roughly 4 rows depending on guage) so total piece is 4 1/4".
end after a wrong side row (row 30)

Join into the round:
Row 31 knit and purl across the left hand side - this is where you need to return it to exact 3x3 rib if you do have any thicker/thinner lines.  When you reach the end of the left hand side, start to cast on the after spout (this will be backwards to normal, the stitches coming from the active (right) needle using the left needle to loop them around - also known as left handed!), cast 6 stitches, place a stitch marker and cast another 6 stitches.  Now you join the left hand side to the right hand side - you can tie a little knot from the left over tail to the active yarn if you need, and knit into the first stitch on the right hand side pulling it tight to the 12th cast on stitch you last did.  Continue along the right hand side, as above making sure it is 3x3 rib if not already.  As you get to the end of the right hand side, you will need to join the right hand side to the left hand side to make it circular.  I prefer to use magic loop technique but you can use normal circular knitting and then transfer to double pointed needles at the appropriate time.  When you get back to the beginning of the round and to the cast on stitches remember to maintain the ribbing - K3, P3, slip stitch marker, K3, P3 and then continue as normal.  Remember as you are now knitting in the round where the rib was previously K3, P3 one row and P3, K3 the next row, it will always be K3, P3 every round.  Keep going for just over 1/4" (2 rounds) and stop at the stitch marker.

Work top:
You have now reached the top of the trunk, and will work only in knit now, no ribbing anymore!!

Thread dark yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight under work to close hole.

Using yarn tails, mattress stitch up the spout from base to decreased top (rectangular hole 2" x 1" remains), and mattress stitch 1" from base to handle (3" gap remains).  Weave in ends.

That's the main bulk of it done - it's now the exciting decorating with bits and bobs of your choice; flora or fauna - see main page for some suggestions.
